The regions of the brain that become active during mind wandering belong to two important networks. One is known as the executive control system. Located mainly in the front of the brain, these regions exert a top-down influence on our conscious and unconscious thought, directing the brain’s activity toward important goals. The other regions belong to another network called the default network. In 2001 a group led by neuroscientist Marcus Raichle at Washington University discovered that this network was more active when people were simply sitting idly in a brain scanner than when they were asked to perform a particular task. The default network also becomes active during certain kinds of self-referential thinking, such as reflecting on personal experiences or picturing yourself in the future.

Go read his post.

There’s definitely something of significance to the Twitter/social media aspect of the situation in Iran, but it’s not the only thing. It’s more illustrative to me of our news organizations’ tendency to be rather one-dimensional and enthusiastically echo one-another in their coverage of a complicated issue.

Particularly disappointing to me is how some journalists are just throwing in the towel rather than embracing the alternative sources. Yesterday there was a story about some of the Iranian soccer team wearing green wristbands in support of Mousavi and the protesters. CBS news picked it up from somebody’s TwitPic, and then completely punted by disclaiming:

Just like anything else on a social networking site, we can’t verify that the picture shows what it says it shows

Nevermind that this was a World Cup qualifying match vs. South Korea and so was fully covered by sports networks and press. There was all kinds of corroborating material on the match available, and it should have been a minor job to find out if those wristbands are a normal part of the Iranian side’s kit. A modicum of diligence, and the journalist could have turned the story into something more than a professional’s reblog.

emptyage:

As always happens, first came the hype, followed by the backlash. After spending a few days talking about the Twitter revolution, reporters began (rightly) calling shenanigans. The tipping point…

Suitcase With $134 Billion Puts Dollar on Edge

Suitcase With $134 Billion Puts Dollar on Edge:
Read this.
